Poema

with the word of God at the heart

“For we are God’s masterpiece.
He has created us anew in Christ Jesus,
so that we can do the good things
He planned for us long ago.”
Ephesians 2:10

The Greek word in this scripture is Poema which means ‘something that is created or made; masterpiece or work of art’.

I do not flatter myself that any of the products I have made is by any means a ‘masterpiece’ or ‘work of art’ but the message I believe God is conveying through each piece I have been inspired to make, is that you and I and every man, woman and child in the world has been lovingly created. Nothing haphazard or cobbled together but thoughtfully, lovingly and carefully handcrafted by God our Father.

Psalm 139 tells us that God ‘saw us before we were born’ (verse 16). King David, who wrote this psalm, writes in verse 14:

‘I praise you
because I am fearfully and wonderfully made;
your works are wonderful,
I know that full well.’

He acknowledged that God’s workmanship was marvellous. He believed he was God’s masterpiece and so should we!
Each of us is the unique, handcrafted creation of our Heavenly Father.

Why Poema ?
In the summer of 2011, this word spoke into my heart. It was at a time when I believe God was directing me into a more creative form of worshiping Him. A time when I was coming to a realisation that God has given me this ability to make things which bring encouragement and a smile to my friends’ faces. In turn, by making these gifts, I feel the Lord smiling on me and in the words of Eric Liddell “…I feel His pleasure.”  I remember hearing this word Poema’ at a conference and it had a marked impact on me. It resonated deep within my heart.

Poema

I have always loved the scripture in Ephesians 2:10 and in my bible many years ago, I underlined it, adding the words ‘I’m God’s work of art!’ beside it. Even then, God was reminding me that I am precious and special to Him. But that message is not only for me. It’s for all of us. Every one of us is His masterpiece; His work of art; His creation; His ‘Poema’.

So, now we know how awesome we all are, what do we do now? Well, the scripture continues: … so that we can do the good things He planned for us long ago.’  Most of the works of art we see in galleries tend to just hang around waiting to be admired. But God has a different plan for His masterpiece. If we have been created anew in Christ then we have work to do. Work that God has prepared for us and equipped us for. It is my belief that part of the work He has planned for me is to develop the crafts that I make and to ensure that they carry the Word of God at the heart of each one.
